A record year for the Panama Canal - 14/11/2017

A record year for the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal announces a volume of 13,548 ships for 2017, an increase of 3.3% over one year. Between 2016 and 2017, the volume of goods rose to more than 403.8 million tons, up 22%. Most of the goods are containers (143 Mt), oil (105 Mt), bulk (79 Mt) and RoRo vessels (47 Mt).

The much higher growth in tonnages can be explained by the extension works, which now make it possible to pass more ships but especially larger boats. The fiscal year 2017 of the Panama Canal began on October 1, 2016 and ended on September 30, 2017. This is the first full fiscal year since the Canal expansion.

"It was a record year beyond expectations" said Panama Canal Administrator Jorge Luis Quijano. "These figures reflect once again the commitment of the Panama Canal to provide greater revenues to the country, with an efficient, safe and competitive operation for our customers."

The major shipping routes using the canal are the Asian and US East Coast routes (34%), the West Coast of South America and the East Coast of the United States. (13%). Europe (7%), the West Coast of Central America and the East Coast of the United States (7%) and South America intercostal (5%). The United States is the departure or arrival destination for 68.3% of vessels transiting the Panama Canal, ahead of China, Chile, Japan, Mexico and Colombia.

Centrimex offers a wide range of container service. Optimization of costs, synchronization of supply flows, safety of shipments and controlled deadlines, the maritime container solution has all the advantages.
