Newsletter Centrimex December 2016 - 06/12/2016

Newsletter Centrimex December 2016

In 2015, 80% of global goods were transported by sea... Last year, global maritime trade surpassed a volume of 10 billion tonnes, representing an increase of 2.1% compared to 2014. The results of this year, however, remain somewhat mixed – the overall growth of the sector was hindered by a feeble increase in trade in dry bulk products and by weak results in container transport. The short-term prospects are not necessarily reassuring; events cause public, political and economic disruption, e.g. the fall in Chinese demand, persistently low commodities prices and uncertainty linked to the political situation in oil- and gas-producing countries.

The long-term outlook, however, is more encouraging. Global population and demand continue to grow. Transport and infrastructure projects are multiplying and bringing new trade opportunities, for instance the widening of the Suez and Panama canals. The transport capacity of container ships has continued to grow, reaching more than 19 437 MVP in 2016 (MSC Diana - MSC/Liberia). The boom in maritime trade and containerisation is continuing and Centrimex is committed to supporting you through its new logistics schemes. Our teams put their responsiveness and their proximity to work for you, offering you security, quality, flexibility and expertise.

SOLAS extension until 1 February 2017 - 07/10/2016

SOLAS extension until 1 February 2017

As we tell you there some time in our news about the weighing of shipping containers, from July 2016 onwards, shippers will be required to weigh and declare the gross mass of their containers before these are transferred to the ship owner at the departure terminal under the terms of the new version of the international SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea). The requirements of the SOLAS Convention concerning container weight verification will therefore apply from this summer.

A meeting on the implementation of the Convention was held recently between DGITM (Direction Générale des  Infrastructures des  Transports  et de la  Mer) and the national maritime professional organizations.

A consensus was reached to extend the transitional measures in the implementation of provisions of the decree of April 28, 2016, until February 1, 2017.

The first action concerns the transfer of containers without VGM before 1 July 2016. This measure is no longer necessary, it is simply not renewed :
